Small wonder that so many winter Olympians are Canadian. In our Northern climate, we have long, cold winters where we can play virtually every winter sport imaginable! Come enjoy an old favourite or give a new sport a try (broomball, anyone!?).
2018 activities included:
Weekends and Family Day 1pm - 5pm
Instructors from River Valley Programs offer hands-on lessons and free cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals during the Silver Skate Festival.

Try on a pair of speed skates from the Edmonton Speed Skating Association and see how fast you can go! Members of the club will be on hand to get you fitted with skates and give you some tips on basic speed skating technique. The Edmonton Speed Skating Association aims to provide a fun and positive experience whether through achievement, affiliation, participation or leadership. Speed skating is part of a healthy lifestyle. It connects people, helping to build and strengthen families and communities, developing character through principles of fair play. ESSA operates according to sound ethical standards and principles of social, financial and environmental sustainability, which allows it to maintain viable programs. The Association provides opportunities for personal growth and development through sport. The club offers programs for all ages and abilities.
Jam Can Curling
One of Canada's favourite Olympic sports, curling is a popular pass time at the Silver Skate Festival. Curling lanes will be created beside the Hawrelak Pavillion.
Originating in Canada, Broomball is a recreational ice game that is played with a stick called a broom and a ball. At the Silver Skate Festival we play on a snowpack field. Tactics and plays are similar to those used in sports such as ice hockey and roller hockey but we focus on fun.
Practice your shot, improve your accuracy. Hockey nets and sticks are set up in our "They Shoot, they score" range.
