The River Valley Play Boys

The River Valley Play Boys are a band some time in the making. With members from numerous bluegrass bands over the past 25 years, what was old is new again! Banjo player Curtis Appleton has played in numerous Alberta bluegrass bands over the past 20 years, including Black Lightning, Maple Creek, and Down to the Wood. His music has taken him across western Canada, as a performer and teacher. On bass fiddle, Zach Daniel is a relative newcomer to bluegrass music. His extensive musical knowledge and experience has made him a natural, and has definitely been bitten by the bluegrass bug.

Fiddler Byron Myhre is an award winning instrumentalist, and played in the seminal bluegrass band Jerusalem Ridge for the better part of 15 years, recording and touring all around North America. He is in demand as a sideman and session player on many instruments. He comes from a deep family tradition of old time and bluegrass music. During the day he is proprietor of Myhre’s Music, specializing in high end acoustic instruments.

Marc Ladouceur, on mandolin, is no stranger to the bluegrass scene. With Critical Grass in the mid 90s, and a founding member of Down to the Wood, his music has taken him across Canada. Also a sideman, teacher, and session player, he has toured with numerous recording artists over the past 25 years.

Rounding out this lineup, playing guitar, is the amazing multi-instrumentalist Matt Hotte. Cutting his teeth as a youngster winning fiddle contests, he developed a very authentic bluegrass sound on many instruments, playing as a teen all across the States with the Liberty Bluegrass band. He also did a tour of duty with award winning bluegrass band Lost Highway, which took him across North America and Europe. Many local bands, including Ida Red, Black Lightning, and the country duet Matt and Kayla Hotte, have benefited from his inspired playing and singing.

All together, they share a love of old time bluegrass music, played in the tradition of the masters who started it all, including Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, and Jimmy Martin, to name a few.
