Be a Silver Skate Ambassador!
As the festival grows, so does our need for volunteers. We are always looking for people eager to help create a wonderful winter experience for all our festival goers.
This year we have a fantastic volunteer hub where you can sign up and find all our volunteer opportunities. Find the hub anytime by typing this into your browser: timecounts.org/silver-skate-festival. Learn a little more about volunteering below:
Why volunteer at Silver Skate Festival?
This wonderful winter festival could not happen without volunteers. The festival and all who attend benefit from the time you so generously give. You get to enjoy time in Hawrelak Park while taking in this unique blend of sport, recreation, art and culture. Find and share the joy of winter. Try the activities, make new friends, and get fed. If you are needing proof of volunteer hours, we’ll provide you with a letter.
Volunteer on your own, with friends, or as a family. Children age 12-17 can sign up on their own. We will place them on appropriate activities for their age and with an older volunteer as needed. We also welcome parents to bring their children younger than 12 years with them to learn the joy of volunteering.
What will you do?
A wonderful variety of volunteer opportunities await: site preparation, recreation supervisor, fire tender, greet/info team, donations, surveys, parking attendant, race support, food/hospitality, and site crew support. Select which areas you are interested in on the sign up form. You will be able to self-schedule for some of the teams. Others will require approval before shifts are confirmed.
Volunteers are needed mornings, afternoons and evenings from February to 10-20 mostly on the weekends but some during the week as well. Shifts are generally four hours long. You will be given warm up, bathroom and snack breaks as needed. We could also use a hand in the weeks before the festival with site preparation as well as after for tear down.
Where will you work?
The festival is in Hawrelak Park - Edmonton's winter wonderland. Check out the Getting Here page. This is a winter festival and most of the volunteer jobs are outdoors. Some involve sitting by a fire or in a heated tent.
How do you get started?
Go to our volunteer hub to fill in the signup form and see all the positions and shifts. You don’t have to create an account to sign up but if you do, then you can view and modify your shifts as needed. A reminder email will be to sent to you 2 days prior to each shift.
Is there an orientation?
Maybe. Some teams such as the Greet/Info Team will definitely have an orientation. Others may not; you will simply get instructions for your task when you arrive. However, everyone is expected to read the volunteer handbook beforehand so they understand festival basics like checking-in, communication protocols and handling issues such as lost kids, first aid and other emergencies. If you have any unanswered questions, please contact the volunteer coordinator. You will be contacted if you are scheduled for a role that requires an orientation.
Thank you! You are truly appreciated.
Our volunteers are key to our success. We do our best to make the experience enjoyable for you. You will be provided with a volunteer badge, a place to warm up, a hot meal, snacks and refreshments, and Silver Skate swag. We also enter your name to win draw prizes such as a Family Choice Pass to West Edmonton Mall attractions and passes to City attractions.
