BIOGRAPHIES FOR 2012 ARTISTS

Jason Kodie

Jason Kodie is and continues to be an active musician in the charming northern Canadian capital city of Edmonton Alberta, and has been doing so for the past 20 years.

He performs routinely and vigorously with a cast of characters and bands, (Allez Ouest, Captain Tractor, Le Fuzz), and an extensive list of former bands who have either burned out or were forced into early retirement. Among the many chapeaux that he may wear, he has also carved a niche as a sought after accordionist, musical director, and soundscape designer.

He once landed a quad - 4 gigs in one day in 4 cities! Beat that Kurt Browning.

The release of his first solo record 'A Blessed Curse', propels his journey as a musician with many hats forward.

Josephine van Lier

A versatile musician, Josephine van Lier is equally at ease on a baroque cello or a 5 string violoncello piccolo as on their contemporary counterparts, using instruments and bows whose designs, construction and material span over 400 years in origin; from the gut strings of her baroque cello to her 1870 cello and the space-age material of her carbon-fibre cello. She therefore covers a wide variety of repertoire utilizing the endless possibilities that this range of instruments, string set-ups and bows allow her.  In addition Josephine van Lier plays and teaches viola da gamba.

A passionate and very active performer, soloist and chamber musician, Josephine is always looking for challenging  and exciting projects. She performs throughout North America, Asia and Europe.

The founder and president of Early Music Alberta, she has a strong affinity with early music and gives historically informed performances on period appropriate instruments across the world.

She released a 4 CD set featuring all six suites for unaccompanied cello played on 4 different cellos. This unique recording of all six of J.S. Bach's Cello Suites sets side by side the different sounds of historic and new instruments and compares their strengths and weaknesses. The CD has received numerous rave reviews in leading publications around the world, such as STRAD Magazine and Early Music Today.

Born, raised and educated in the Netherlands, she has lived in Edmonton since 1995.

She is recipient of the "Celebration of Women in the Arts Award" from the Edmonton Arts Council.

Lucas Chaisson

Described as folk, roots, blues and country, he joins his eclectic tastes and musical mannerisms together with his soulful voice and a lyrical knack far beyond his years.

Lucas has been well received in his home province of Alberta and across Canada. His first release, entitled “No Loitering,” earned him a nomination for “Young Performer of the Year” at the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and invitations to many of the countries most prestigious festivals including the Edmonton, Canmore and Winnipeg Folk Festivals. His skilful, percussive guitar style, insightful lyrics and honest vocals keep audiences engaged and wanting more. Although in the business a relatively short time, Lucas’ drive and passion for music is spreading quickly.

The term "old soul" is over used but it's literally the case with this clever young tunesmith. His lyrics are mature, well crafted and interesting. His vocal styling is akin to that of Brett Dennen and Ron Sexsmith; his performance style is reminiscent of a young Neil Young. When he's on stage, he is exactly where he is supposed to be.
