Folk Trails 2013

February 16 - 17, 2013 | 3pm - 8pm

February 18, 2013 | Noon-5pm

In 2013 the Silver Skate Folk Trail will run from 3 pm to 8 pm on Saturday and Sunday, and 12 pm to 5 pm on Monday.  We will be telling the story of Little Red Riding Hood and Baba Yaga, a cautionary tale with the moral “Don’t stray from the path.”  But as the journey of Little Red Riding Hood and the public unfolds they discover that straying from the path rewards them with a magical world of adventure and illumination.  Lantern and snow installations transform the woods.

We meet Little Red Riding Hood, the Wolf, a wild man of the forest, and Red Riding Hood’s grandmother who in this magical world is none other than Baba Yaga herself.  We dance behind the moon.  We peer into other worlds.  We are enchanted. In the Village of Comfort, the villagers, played by teams of fire artists, are busy making effigies of all things that frighten them.  These will be set on fire in the darkness of night -  six fire sculptures on the Saturday - and a large one made by all on the Sunday.  The public may add to these sculptures by writing down their own fears at a workshop station near the Story Teller’s Tent and bringing them to the sculptures to be burned.  During the day Baba Yaga and other story tellers will engage the public in her tent and tell tales from all over the world. In the afternoon lantern making begins in preparation for the evening’s procession which brings the magic of the woods, the light and the fire back home to the village.  If the villagers will not come to the woods, then the woods will come to the
villagers and dazzle them.  So ends each night.

On Monday, the final day of the Silver Skate Folk Trail, the trail continues to be animated by roving performers and the tents are programmed with story tellers and musical performers.  The villagers and the public discover the woods as they have never imagined them.   As the day winds down a setting sun ceremony brings the public and the actors together to put the magic away for another year in anticipation of Silver Skate Folk Trails to come.
