SILVER SKATE FESTIVAL 2012
KORTEBAAN RACES 2012 February 18th, 2012 Hawrelak Park, Edmonton
The Kortebaan (Court-te-ban) is a traditional Dutch speed skating sprint race held on outdoor ice. This 160 m straight race at Hawrelak Park has a long and storied history and was one of the first formats used to declare speed skating “champions”. Racers are matched as pairs and a knockout system is used to reach a “sudden death” final. Historically the “champion” was generally awarded prize money and a Ham. This good-natured competition is focused on fun and everyone is a winner.
Through the generous sponsorship of the Netherlands Consulate the second annual Kortebaan Cup, co-hosted by the Edmonton Speed Skating Association (ESSA) was held on Saturday, February 19, 2011. Not only was prize money awarded but the male and female champions were the proud recipients of our first official Kortebaan Cups, generously donated by Canstar Instruments. The Ard Schenk Kortebaan Cup for Men was won by Jackson Hill, while the Marianne Timmer Kortebaan Cup for Woman was won by Anna Ringsred. (The Kortebaan Cup was generously donated by Canstar Instruments.)
Congratulations to the winners the next Kortebaan cup will be held on February 18, 2012 DOWNLOAD THE 2012 KORTEBAAN REGISTRATION |
